WHO WE ARE

The Luso Canadian Association is a non profit cultural, recreational, and aid society made up of members and volunteers. Their purpose, as set out in their bylaws, is to encourage and maintain the Portuguese language, culture, traditions, and customs, while also promoting the integration of their members into Canadian life.

HISTORY

The Luso Canadian Association was formed in 1961, making it the first organized cultural group in Kitimat. It was started by Portuguese families who had come to the area in the late 1950s and wanted a place to gather, speak their language, and maintain their traditions while building their lives in Canada.

Early meetings were held in the fire hall before members secured their own space. Volunteers helped establish and maintain what would become the Luso hall. Over the years, the building has hosted dinners, dances, meetings, weddings, fundraisers, and community gatherings.
Generations of families in Kitimat have marked important moments with the Luso Canadian Association.

The Luso Canadian Association was the first organized cultural group in Kitimat, forming a club charter in 1961.

Community Involvement

Kitimat's Luso Ladies have long played an important role in the Association’s activities, preparing traditional Portuguese meals for club events and community celebrations.

The Association supports local food programs and outreach efforts. In recent years, volunteers have prepared and donated hundreds of meals to families in need through local partnerships, including holiday dinners distributed through community programs.

In addition to public events such as flag raisings and heritage celebrations, we have hosted representatives from the Portuguese Consulate to provide services to residents in the region.
